No One Can Whistle a Symphony

Reflection on the Hero’s Journey poster project:
I really enjoyed the Hero’s Journey poster project. I loved working with the people in my group, we all worked together really well. All of the work was divided evenly and fairly. We all brought as many supplies as we could to help out the group. I was pretty pleased with the overall outcome of the poster. I loved all the pretty paper and stickers and things like that, it was really fun for me and I really loved my group. I love the artistic freedom we were granted. It was also interesting for me to fully realize how prominent the hero’s cycle is, and how it applies to almost every story.
The poster in enjoyed the most was the Mulan poster. I loved the simplicity and cleanliness of the poster. The black and red were really beautiful with the contrast. It was very cool to learn about all the points of the hero’s cycle applying to Mulan, especially because it is one of my favorite movies.

I'll Be Up Up and Away

09.19.13
Friday Free Write.
This weekend I had one of the best nights of my life. I got to go to a huge concert at Red Rocks with some of my favorite artists preforming. I had known about the concert for a while, and I wanted to go more than anything. I really should have gotten tickets earlier, but I didn’t. As weird as it sounds, it actually turned out perfectly to wait till the tickets were sold out.
My boyfriend and I like the same music, which is a cool thing to share, especially because going to concerts together is a really cool experience. We both were determined to go to this concert. His uncle works at Red Rocks and did us a huge favor. The concert soon became sold out. Because of his position at the amphitheater, he actually got us free tickets. I was so grateful and so excited. I had no idea what else was in store for me.
When we got to Red Rocks the afternoon of the concert, his uncle drove us up to the entrance. We got to skip all the lines, which were huge, curving down and all around the giant rocks. I had only ever seen pictures of the amphitheater, and they didn’t do the place justice. It was so beautiful with the evening sun cast up on the giant orange rocks all around. They let us into the amphitheater before everyone else (we really got the treatment). We went and sat down front row. I never expected to sit front row, it got me that much more pumped for the show. Soon enough, the first artist came out.
The show was absolutely incredible. Every artist was incredible. The sounds were incredible. It was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. I am so lucky to have been there. It is something I will never forget.

Evil is in the Eye of the Beholder

09.09.13
Select a passage from the homework and analyze it.
The fact that the evil power is not identified with any specific nation on this earth means you’ve got an abstract power, which represents a principle, not a specific historical situation” (Campbell page 144).
I find this passage very interesting because it is saying that evil has always lived, and always will live in the people. We do not identify a specific nation as evil; therefore it is an abstract power. We can’t see it; we can’t point our finger at evil, which means we can’t get rid of it either. The abstract power is in humanity. Another reason for us not being able to fully unite evil is because of the different perceptions of it. If someone commits an action of evil, it may be perceived as heroic to the one doing it, or the people he is doing it for. Take a member of the army for example. For the people he is protecting, he is the hero. For the people he is fighting against, he is the enemy. He is the one doing harm and killing people. So is he evil? Yes and no.

Hero is Not a Noun, But a Verb

09.03.13
What does the word hero mean to you? Do you have a hero? Real or fictional?

To me, a hero is someone I admire for who they are as a person. They should be someone you aspire to be like because of what they bring to humanity. My hero is definitely my father. This sounds pretty cliché, but he has been my hero from day one. I admire my father’s line of work. He has a tremendously stressful and difficult job. He went to school for fourteen years after college just to do what he does. He is an anesthesiologist, and I admire so much how he wakes up every morning to literally save the lives of strangers who come to his table often close to death. I love how much he puts in to help people.
Not only do I admire my father’s job, but the person he is. I have learned so much from my dad. He truly is a good person. He treats everyone with respect and kindness, he is accepting of every person, no matter their choices in the way they live their lives. I love his sense of humor and how he is always trying to make someone laugh. The love he has for is family is so admirable. He wants the best for every one of us. The best gift you could ever give to my father is his family all spending time together. I think that says something amazing about him.
My father is amazing because of the way he treats his family, especially my mother. my father's one and only goal would be to make my family happy. I admire so much how he has been with my mother since they were fifteen years old, and he has loved her unconditionally for over thirty years. He still does things like give little surprises to her and sometimes us children. He just want to see her happy and smiling. I love my dad so much, I admire almost every aspect of him. He is and always will be my hero.
